Choosing security screens that last in Cairns humidity
Salt, dust and a wet season that finds every gap. Here's what actually decides whether a security screen lasts up here.
Most screen failures in Far North Queensland aren't about the mesh being weak. They're about the wrong material in the wrong location, or fixings that were never rated for the site.
Three things decide how long a screen lasts here: how close the property sits to salt, how much moisture stays trapped around the frame, and whether the fixings are compatible with the mesh.
Distance from the water changes the specification
A house at Kewarra Beach or Yorkeys Knob is in a genuine marine environment. Screens there need marine grade mesh and a coastal-rated powder coat, and they need rinsing with fresh water regularly to stay within warranty.
The same product a few kilometres inland at Smithfield or Edmonton will have an easier life, which sometimes means a more economical option is genuinely fine.
Trapped moisture does more damage than rain
Screens fitted tight against a wet reveal, or shaded areas that never dry out, corrode faster than screens in full sun and rain. Drainage and clearance at installation matter as much as the product on the invoice.
Mixed metals are the quiet killer
Stainless mesh, aluminium frames and the wrong screws create galvanic corrosion. A good screen fitted with cheap fasteners will stain and fail around the fixing points long before the mesh gives up.
This is the main reason we install everything with our own team rather than subcontracting it out.
What to ask before you sign anything
Ask what mesh grade is quoted, what the warranty requires you to do, and what the fixings are made from. If those three answers are clear, you're most of the way to a screen that lasts.
